HONOLULU
The Hawaii Legislature has passed a two-year extension of a law protecting journalists from having to reveal sources or unpublished information in court.
The House of Representatives unanimously approved the bill Thursday, sending it to Gov. Neil Abercrombie for his consideration. The measure previously passed the Senate.
The measure extends the journalist shield law for two years, until July 2013. It would have expired at the end of June if lawmakers hadn’t taken action.
Hawaii’s journalist shield law is stronger than those in most other states because it also protects online bloggers.
Thirty-six states and the District of Columbia have permanent shield laws.
